What free/shareware software is available to audibly improve a voice recording?

I have a voice recording as a WAV file and I would like to a remove a chunk of speech in the middle and to minimise interfering background noise. I would also like to convert to MP3. Many thanks in advance

3. Hi, Audacity is probably the best software for your needs. It is free to download, easy to use and yet has a lot of functionalities like editing wav and mp3 files. In the past I also used Cool Edit for noise reduction, but I would advise you to try Audacity first. 4. try goldwave, download the trial version or see if there is a free download of any older versions.

Audacity is excellent but you will need to download the lame encoder in order to export to mp3; I prefer Wavepad because it is much easier to use http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html click on "download wavepad" for the free version; if prompted to download additional software during installation, DON'T as it isn't free. Just install wavepad Go to open file to load your wav file; it has a ton of features which you will find under EDIT or EFFECTS. When you are satisfied, go to File>Save File As and select mp3 from the menu.
